Run a publication

Publication guide

On this page

This guide is for the people who run a publication day to day: administrators, editors and the members who help them. Each part has its own page.

Getting set up#

Every week#

  • Writing and review: how members write, and how editors review, request changes, accept and publish.
  • Newsletter issues: putting an issue together, aiming parts of it at groups, testing, scheduling and delivery reports.
  • Subscribers and accounts: sign-ups, imports and exports, unsubscribes, and what members can do with their accounts.

Now and then#

  • Competitions: moderated entries, appointed judges, reader voting and published results.
  • Business outreach and previews: a private inbox for opportunities from businesses, and private links for sharing a draft issue.

Who does what#

New publications start with these roles. Change them under Dashboard → Groups and permissions.

Role Can
Everyone Read the public site, subscribe to the newsletter.
Members Everything above, plus write and submit pieces, join reader groups, and read members-only articles.
Editors Review submissions, edit and publish any article, put issues together and send them, manage subscribers and pages, and read the activity log.
Administrators Everything, including settings, groups, permissions, email and design.

The permissions reference lists every permission and what each group starts with.
